A home from home...well a shed

As the proud new owner of a plot, naturally my first thoughts turn to getting a shed erected; somewhere I might sit with a glass of sherry ruminating on all things allotment.

This is my first allotment however, and I must admit that the shed issue is causing me a little concern.

Do the big companies B&Q, Homebase etc deliver to allotment sites? If not can anyone recommend an online company, how did you get your shed on site?

(My plot is on the Lower Southcote site in Reading, I think there are a few people on these boards with plots there).

Basically any allotment shed advice welcomed!

As it is well on in the season, might be worth waiting until springtime before getting a shed. before that time, you may well find that someone on your site is giving up their plot and may have a shed up for grabs for not a lot. B&Q do a short term van hire here so your local one may have a similar arrangement if you can manage your own delivery.

Hi Duggan, welcome to the Vine. No idea where you are, could you add your location to your profile please? I would imagine that any of the big companies would be prepared to deliver, but you would need to be there to meet them or your precious shed could well go missing.

Don't buy a B and Q cheapie shed, is the first thought to come into my head. A friend of mine bought one, just wanted a cheapo as she is tidying out the garage before selling the house. Had I remembered in time, I would have told her that B&Q has a horrendous returns/complaints rate about its cheapest sheds.
In the end, I had to buy more plywood, tarred felt etc to replace the roof that didn't fit and a floor that was too thin, and the cost was almost doubled for a shed that has daylight showing through the walls. Total cost was near £300, which can get a good one.
If you have any friends who have good DIY skills, you would probably be better to buy marine ply sheeting, 2 by 2 spars and cheapo roof felt, and build it yourself. Not as cheap, but infinitely better built if you take care, take shelves and windows as needed, and very durable. It's not rocket science, build a wall at a time then attach at the corners, roof last.
If not, you could do as I did and buy a metal one online - but it was a b$%^* to build (22 man hours in a oner), and I had to leave it when I gave up the allotment.

i used a local company who delivered and errected it on my plot, have a look round for a local company you get much better service than the big sheds and glad to see you getting your priorities right a shed is the first thing i put on my plot

how did you get your shed on site?

Delivery was a problem for me too (I have a bike and a Smart). I bought mine from eBay and the guy delivered for an extra £30.
Any of the old boys on site with a trailer would've done it too ~ just ask, don't be shy

I had a 12ft x 8ft pent shed made to my own spec (no windows and stronger floor to take machinery) delivered and erected for £500-00p.

I bought my shed back in Feb off web site and they wouldn't deliver to allotment had to be address on the card I paid for it on. I finally got it up on the plot last week. Better late than never LOL would have been alot easier if I went for a company who would deliver to plot!!

I bought mine off EBay (reasonably locally - ie about 8 miles) and hired a local 'man with a van' to collect and deliver to the plot.

Welcome to the Vine Duggan. As RL has suggested, please put Reading in your profile so we remember where you are. I bought my shed from a small local company who delivered and erected it no trouble at all and at a very reasonable price.
