Aye - but brassica and roots are 2 groups from 2 different rotations; you can have families or types - but if you mix then it's not a rotation. So if you are doing a rotation to stop disease then all families need to be grown together. If you are doing it as types then all roots would go together. Otherwise it just gets confusing.

I only rotate the potatoes; everything else just doesn't get followed with like. It keeps it simple and flexible.

Me too - potatoes and alliums get rotated, I was only trying to help.

Some excellent points for me to give some thought to, my initial thought is i like the idea of rotation, and as i am planning lots of spuds and roots it should work, just need to have a season or two i guess to work my timings out properly so i dont have areas not been productive, not sure how it will all pan out yet.

Have been down tonight and dug over another area, about 24sq metres, only another 60 left then its all dug.

Also managed to put some leek plants out, they were a bonus, farm shop owner i know asked if i wanted them for nowt as they were going spare, so in they went, about 300 plants, more than i need or wanted but rather give them away than they go in the bin, got about 200 onion plants off him as well, and 20 broccoli, will put them in tomorrow morning, soon wont have any room left !! hope they all get on well together.

One question, whats an allium ?- just looked it up, its onions

        Rob.

Oh yeah, i wont be putting any fruit in on this plot as it is only a private garden next to the allotments, not my own allotment, and no telling when i may loose it, but i do have my name down for an allotment and am next on the list, had the nodd there may be a vacancy in november time.

Yeah, kind of. Every year (my year starts in October) the beds get rotated one place, with brassicas going in the old bean bed, etc.
However, I'm not strict about it and gave up getting worried about not following like with like in the same year. As an example, when my autumn onions came out in June, I immediately put spring onions in there, and leeks are in now following the July-lifted onions (see below)

hahaha, now I'm not rotating spuds or alliums at all (because my plot has scab and white rot ~ I've now made permanent beds and am replacing the soil with homemade compost & leafmold, lots of it).
