Right, I'm looking to buy some pots I want something that will withstand frost and is well made as I want them to last a life time. Are there any pots I should and should not buy??????

buy galvanised metal ones. don't buy terracotta.

Shaun it all depends what you want to grow in them and how pretty you want them to be. Taffs right about terracotta unless its well glazed water will get in, freeze and the pot will crack.

I don't do pretty, my main criteria are is it cheap/free and will it do the job.

I do like the look of a few wooden pots about and rather cheap too! But it would rott no doubt! I wanted to place soft fruit tree and a small potted orchard???

For wooden containers I buy pressure treated timber and make my own. This timber will last for years and now days is perfectly safe to use. The pic shows my blackberry in an home made job.

Dunno about Colin but my stock answer to that is 45p per mile for running costs plust travelling time plus time on job. .. Gwan, you can do it yourself, it's basic joinery

here's a pic of a planter I knocked up out of some old decking boards. Only tools needed, a handsaw, pencil, drill to make pilot holes, tape measure and screwdriver. Her indoors was well impressed and has commissioned more.

OK now im confused!!! I have read that there are frostproof Terracota containers that are uv proof and shock proof. Is this aload of rubbish or the really thing????

you can get frostproof (frost-resistant) terracotta, yes.

Terracotta dries out really quickly in the summer though: line it with plastic to conserve moisture ~ or buy plastic pots in that lovely orangey terracotta colour, they're cheap enough

Cheap and cheerful i love it=] Will it be heavy enough tho or will it get blown over????

Shaun my son as a miniature apple tree in a container, yes its large some 24" in dia. But even for miniature trees it needs to be big and no it don't blow over.
