Why do my aubergines flower and rot / beef tomatoes brown?

Hello all

Im new here, just discovering this website today. Im a keen but amateur gardener that manages to produce the usual tomatoes / spring onions / courgettes / peppers / garlic every year BUT I've never managed to get aubergines to grow - the plants always take off very nicely and grow nice and tall and produce lovely purple flowers but then they start to rot and die - I plant them at the right time according to the packet and they stay in my greenhouse. I've known other people to suffer from this too but none of us know the answer. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Actually talking of tomatoes too, I've managed to grow many varieties fine but I tried beef ones last year which grew to very odd flat shapes with brown rot lines developing in them?

I'm the same Helen, I decided to give up but found four seeds left in the packet so i've planted them up.

It was suggested to me to try an earlier variety of smaller aubs because we don't have a long enough growing season for the typical large black ones. Might be worth trying them.

I've been growing aubergines for 3 years and it was only last year that I finally had fruits.
I think it was down to me spraying everyday with a weak garlic/soap solution when I was trying to rid the plants of greenfly. Anyway I'm planning on doing the same thing again this year just in case

aubergines like heat and a lot of it. You can also treat them like peppers/toms and take off any sideshoots too many if you like, it makes them concentrate on fruiting.
Getting an early variety is also probably the best way to go in our climate unless you can make it hot for them.
Having said that, I've managed to grow them outside twice and get fruit, one time in a completely sheltered and sunny spot, one time in the gorund under what is more or less a giant cloche.
they might be rotting from humidity, or from overwatering?
dont know about the toms, a picture or more explanation might be helpful

I find that aubergines are moody b**gers and the only time I got any fruit was when I bought a grafted one from B&Q... So after a coupla years with none at all - thats where I'm going to get mine from this year (other garden centres are available!)
