  • Rods?

I have just spoken to the lady from the allotment association again. She said it costs £8 per shed and £2 per rod. What does per rod mean? So, how much will the allotment cost per year? Hopefully have one by Easter as the council are making some new ones by Easter!

    Thank you

    Sorry for stupid question

A rod is a long stick - traditionally five and a half yards long. A standard allotment plot is 10 rods. ie. Ten times 5.5 x 5.5 yards. That makes 325 square yards (or one sixteenth of an acre).

£2 a rod is about right: that would make mine £20, which it is

              Mine is 35m x 4.25m ie 148.75 sq m = 177 sq yds = 5.85 rods @£2 per rod = £12 plus a shed at £2 = £14.

              My rent is £14

              It works.......

Our only extra would be if we had a water supply piped onto our plot but we don't .....

the answer you got did seem a bit rude, if you ask me. No one outside of allotment associations use "rods" as a unit of measurement, and it would have been much more accommodating to say x length by y breadth.

I have a "standard" 10 rod plot and it costs me £64 a year (though it's discounted for the first 2 years as it was several years neglected when I took it on). No shed fees though!!!

That's what I was told a shed was £8 a year but I don't know if that means there is one on the site already or that's if I put one on! Guess I will find out when I get an allotment - hope its soon!

                        Thank you

The site that I was on had a row of concrete storage sheds - but not enough for everyone. It was dead men's shoes to get one and there was a rental charge for it. As long as you had agreement from the Allotment Committee you could put up your own shed or greenhouse on your plot.

I guess that the shed rental isn't a bad idea, as long as they are solid. Even the cheapest cr*p wooden shed will set you back at least £80-100, and for some people starting out on a plot, that's a lot. But there's sheds, and there's sheds...
