Cukes in hanging baskets

Hello all I'm thinking of trying cucumbers in hanging baskets, the varietys are burpless, dragons egg and lemon
Is this ok ? I may have to support them for the first foot before I let them flop over due to the height of the basket being a bit low
The other thing I was worried about was the stem snapping and do I need an upside down trellis for them to grab onto incase they bunch up?

hmm why in a hanging basket, havent you got room for pots. i think due to the weight of the cucumber the stems will snap - im not sure whether the trellis idea would work?

I think with a couple of cuc's on board the plant will pull out of the basket. Stand the basket on the ground inside a grobag and send the cuc's up canes. Cheers, Tony.

Yeah that's it no space tbh Ive just bought some nice big pots and I was going to put them on the garage and let them just hang over, might just try one and see what happens

There's an article on vertical growing in this month's mag - P78-79 with some clever space saving ideas and pics...don't think it mentions cucumbers...but might give you some good ideas....good luck

How much space do you have at home?

A decent size garden but we've got 3 kids so my only space is on one side which is a 5 metre path
There is more to the end of the garden on the same side but it's overshadowed by a huge willow and just back from there towards the path I've put a raised bed for root veg
All the space that's left will really be for tomatoes I'm trying to grow a few varieties this year I love tomato soup lol and I've got a few raspberry canes and strawberries
I've just pulled down a row of conifers In the front garden so ive dug it all over and my peas are going there and putting down some weed control on the lawn which we never use anyway for all my beans which are dwarfs and pumpkins
it's frustrating really because I want to grow enough to have free veg when it's in season but you end up trying to cram it all in

Sounds like you are making good use of the space you've got though - good for you! You are right about the lottie though, are you on a list?

I've got 2 locally but tbh there so well tendered I haven't even bothered tryin to get in touch, I've enquirer about a couple of plots that may be available but no ones got back to me and it's a 15min drive.....not too bad though

Going back to the cukes I've been reading about upside down in buckets so that should stop the stem snapping .....touch wood
