  • Newbies - post your one-offs here

For new gardeners - there are alot of words and acronyms that when you first start you see and you think 'eh, what does that mean?'

    For example -

    PSB = Purple Sprouting Broccoli
Double Digging = when you dig to 2 spits depth to incorporate compost into your soil to a good depth to prepare your soil for growing veg
    Spit - one spade depth

So I thought - if you want to post 'what is this/does that mean' on here, it can become a bit of a reference for other newbies who come along.

So ask away - and the oldies [like G4] will come along and answer them for you.

I spent an age wondering what on earth FYM (farm yard manure) was...felt far too dumb to ask.

          Good idea, di.

I should have made a list back then, because it really was like learning a foreign language - I was off googling every time I came across something unfamiliar which meant I spent hours and hours every day on the net.

          Some examples:

Toms - sad but true, I honestly didn't know what y'all were referring to (ie tomatoes, for my fellow clueless)
Chit, chitting - waiting for the 'seeds' to sprout, show signs of life. Why not just say sprout then?
Fleece - garden fleece is very different from sofa throw fleece
Sets - onion sets, garlic sets, which apparently mean a bunch of sowing bulbs. Why use the word at all?

Armpits, for some strange reason, are the side shoots that appear in the joints of tomato plant stems.

Dalek is the name we use for black plastic compost bins, you know, because it resembles one.

Oops better stop, you're the ones supposed to be asking the questions!

MPC - Multi Purpose Compost. Or MCP as I keep trying to type it.
BFB - Blood, fish and bone meal (or FBB).

Should the original post be edited so we don't repeat ourselves?

Sorry, Zazzz! and di ! - My fault for having a sticky scroll button and not reaching the top of the page.

Another term I just remembered - leggy. One of my first posts here involved trying to describe my too tall and thin seedlings, and who knew all I could have said was leggy

I think it's for newbies to ask, not for you to offer........

Sure, but everyone so far has suggested what they didn't know when they first started here. Might as well get a basic glossary? Either way, I would think it would make sense to store them in one place for reference rather than scattering them throughout a post. I see though that Zazen is making them show up with bold though which will help!
