I think you can probably start them off for 4-5 yrs in a large, deep pot- but to be honest their root systems grow very wide and very deep ( I'm talking of several feet here!!!!)
If you hinder their roots then I would have thought that eventually they won't crop as well as they are potentially capable of.

How deep do Asparagus go? I feel like they are shallow and spreading rather than deep. If I was tempted to try growing them in containers I feel like something long and low would be better than a pot - something shaped like underbed storage boxes if a UV stable version could be found. Basically a raised bed with a bottom.
