Small shaded area ideas please?

I have a 2mx0.5m bed shaded by a 6ft fence for most of the year. The area possibly gets the odd hour of direct sun on a summer afternoon. It is just clay soil at the moment but I am prepared to improve it.

I am wondering what veg or herb plants I might put in this space please?

The idea of a comfrey bed really appeals.
Gonna read up in Jekka's book tonight and find a local supplier of some Bocking 14 roots which I understand to be the best for making fertiliser tea.

Like you I have a small bed 1 mtr x 1mtr against a north facing fence getting at most 2 hours sun during the summer.

I have 9 calabrese through the summer followed x a host of spring cabbage at this time of year. The calabrese is Green Magic which gives one main head followed by side shoots at least equal to a further head. Pic taken today excuse the splashes been doing a little jet washing.

Thanks for the replies. Lots of great ideas. I am going to double dig the soil and put compost through it and try and source some comfrey to feed the rest of the garden. Found out that comfrey tea gives more fertility than composted animal manure. Growing and Using Comfrey for Gardeners including Comfrey Liquid Fertiliser or Tea is a great read. Cheers Peter

Going to grow the calebrase in the bed which gets a couple of hours sun and was dig though last year. P

Pete: comfrey is fab, I have about 60 plants now (from one root bought on eBay a few years ago).

I've been asked to plant a lawn in total shade (!).
I don't think I'll get this shady lawn seed to grow there, but perhaps something else might do the job, like clover
