Purple podded and telephone peas

I've growing both of these for the first time they were sown on March 1st in loo rolls and germinated by the 9th in my cold greenhouse.

They've been outside during the day for the past 2weeks so i was wondering can they be planted out or do I have to wait until after my last frost date which is early May.

I've not got many of each and i don't want to do anything to kill them off.

I'd get them planted Bren, it won't do them any good hanging around in loo rolls they'll get lanky. Peas are hardier than beans.

Thanks Rustylady like I said in my post I've not grown them before so wasn't too sure what to do.

I have some purple prodded too, only a couple and they've only just been transplanted.

I've got my canes sorted but ran out of time to plant to I'll do that tomorrow.

I planted some peas out today but they are a quite hardy early variety (Pilot, originally from HSL) and have had some in the polytunnel for a few weeks now (Poppet, also originally HSL). I've got some other ones (Serpette Guilloteau) in guttering which will be planted out in a couple of weeks and will be sowing my Telephone next weekend. Not growing purple ones this year (wasn't actually that impressed with the ones I had, the peas were a bit mealy for me). Personally I'd think it's a tad early to be planting out wrinkled seeds yet but if they're getting big then give it a go.

Bren the peas should be OK but be a bit wary of the beans keep a fleece handy. We all know that NE Derby's can have some nasty weather until fairly late on.

I used to do some work for the Sitwell Estate and have been up that way in snow at this time of year.

They should be fine Bren, just keep a bit of fleece handy and peg it onto the canes with laundry pegs if it's forecast below 3/4c overnight. I put mine outside as soon as they germinated and they've been happy enough so far

Colin we've had snow in June so you're right about our odd weather. last night it was a min of 3c in my greenhouse and 'they've' given it to be 1c at the weekend.

I've decided to wait a bit before planting those peas they're only a couple of inches tall so should be fine in the loo rolls.

Thats the only problem with growing in my own back garden I've only got the vine to turn to for advice.

It was minus 1 here this morning on the east coast. Brrr!! It had warmed up to a whopping 19 degrees by lunch time though! Two seasons in one day...

Generally speaking, peas are hardy. Mine are not out yet but that's because I'm trying to wait till I see which lots of my purple mangetout really don't have any green-only shoots. Then I'll know I'm only growing peas which will grow true this year. Must get another type sown! I've got purple mangetout sprogs coming out me ears!
