Today I set my first 8 runner seeds indoors, these I hope will give me some early beans They will be planted out mid May. The rest will go in first week in May so by the time they pop their heads up they should be no frosts.

I will be sowing my french beans in pots first week of May then get them out to harden and plant by start of June depending on the weather.
ok thank you im not very good at this veg gardening
Nobody is when they first start Especially when people (like the old guy) give you bad advice, just so they can sell you stuff
B&Q and Homebase and other big DIY places will be selling stuff far too early as well, so hang on to your money for a little while yet - tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, courgettes, pumpkins etc will all die if they're planted out before the last frost, although they might be okay outside in the day-time and brought indoors overnight.
Good luck with the next lot, although I think you'll be fine now you know what's what
I expect people confuse their broad, runner and French beans. Broad are hardy and can go outside now (once hardened) but the others will be killed by frost. Most people probably wouldn't notice the distinction, especially as the seeds look much the same.
because it would show their own thoughts and deeds to be wrong, and few people like to be proved wrong. I guess I'm in the minority: I'd rather be shown the right way, and put my ego to one side, than struggle along doing the wrong thing
All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
When you're new, there really shouldn't be ego involved since well, newbie meaning practically ignorant and possibly theoretically ignorant too. Maybe it's like that some people don't like asking for directions when they're lost, which is another thing I've never understood - you're lost, lookee, person there might know the way, ask!
I'm all for doing things my own way, but I usually do it as an experiment - try the advice, try other ways too, see how it turns out, see why one way and not the other. But if I was growing something for the first time, I definitely follow instructions because I actually do get heartache over no-germinations/dead seedlings, feeling like I failed somehow, not to mention the wasted time/effort/money involved.
Oh Oh! You've got me again, JD!! I hate asking for directions. I'm not lost, I'm having an adventure!
Its different if I have an appointment to keep, but thankfully, they are few now, so I just wander around finding the surprises around every corner.
Should add, though, that if I ask for advice, I'll usually take it but if I'm told that I should do something differently I may not.
