Germinating peppers

I sowed some peppers (and some coriander) in an unheated propagator on the kitchen windowsill about 2 weeks ago. Nothing has appeared.

Do I just need to wait longer or should I move it to the airing cupboard?

I sowed some mini bell peppers in a heated prop the other week, and they took there time to come through, and are very slow to grow since coming through.

As my propagator is unheated does that just mean they will take longer to germinate, or will it simply never be warm enough (until we have a heatwave in summer ) and so I need the warmth of the airing cupboard. I would have put them there to start with but I thought they had to be in the light.

I usually start mine in the airing cupboard then move into the light when they pop up

They do not need light until they pop through the soil.

They will germinate at this time of year without extra heat but it will take longer.

How warm is your kitchen? I would move them to the airing cupboard, but keep an eye on them. As soon as they show above the compost they need moving to a light place.

I'm always surprised how many of you guys have airing cupboards, not lived in a house with one since a was little as pretty much everybody I know as a combi these days - and as a result a lovely big cupboard where the tank used to be which is very handy for storage

We still have a boiler and a hot water tank in ours and loadsa room (tis old house) and very useful it is too .........our boiler chap doesn't recommend changing to a combi whilst he can still maintain ours .

Germinating peppers

Good to know some of you are succesful Just to be perverse I am experimenting on my window ledge with dragon fruit seed. I put a small number oft o piece of kitchen roll and fitted it into a sealed freezer bag. Most of them have germinated but growth is very slow. What with the blackthorn winter on us, I am wondering it was too cool on there. Anyroadup, let's just wait and when the new GH arrives.
Anyone tried these before?

I grew my GYO mag free seed Peppers in ex-cream pots. OH put holes in the bottom, I filled with compost and planted a half a dozen seeds as per packet instructions and then put the see-through lid on.....

they germinated no probs in our kitchen over a month ago. Mind you, our kitchen does has a glass roof over half the kitchen!

Chillies and bell/sweet peppers need warmth to germinate: if it's too cold the seeds are likely to just rot before it warms up enough

Mine germinated in tall pots on the radiators (tall pots because I didn't want to cook them!) But I'm sure an airing cupboard is much more suitable and I would have used one if I had one.

I've just moved two peppers, two courgettes and two squashes into the airing cupboard and left the rest on the windowsill. That way I can see if the airing cupboard makes a difference. I have just noticed the first coriander seedling so I suspect I just need patience.

Just a note about germinating seeds in the airing cupboard. I find the compost can dry out quite quickly, so i pop the seed trays in a freezer bag or cover with cling film to keep the soil moist.
