  • Pot for squash

Hi does anyone know the minimum size pot for hunter butternut squash?
Ive got loads of morrisons pots that are roughly 10" across and approx 10-12 litre are these too small?

I would say too small as the squash family are very hungry and thirsty plants. But if you can cope with the watering and feeding maybe it's worth a go.

I am no squash expert but would say to small as I have to use bigger pots than that for my courgettes. Aldi had some cheap large plastic trugs in one of those with a drainage hole banged in the bottom would be a better bet.

Have not grown squash but have grown cracking courgettes in a dustbin.

They tell you to plant them about 3ft apart, that should give you some idea of the root system they can grow.

It's not just because they trail about

          So the bigger the better!

I grew some in 25L drums and they still put roots out of the drainage holes

I tried courgettes in builder's buckets last year, but they weren't a great success. I was lulled into thinking that they only have a shallow root system and I couldn't keep up with the watering (they dried out really quickly). Bigger containers or back in the ground for me. Bren's look healthy.

Spunky I think it was 3 per plant but I'd only used saved seeds from the greengrocer so probably would have got more from proper seeds.
