new to gardening

Hi, i am new to this forum and to gardening.

We moved into a council property and the garden was in a right mess, however we have now sorted it out and have realised that some years ago it had been used to grow veg. It was full of weeds and we have dug them all out, but im not sure about growing veg in it, so i have bought a lot of containers in various sizes, a plastic greeenhouse and some vegetable growbags and multi purpose compost and i am going to have a growing veg in these, so any advice anyone you could give would be welcome.

Why are you not sure about growing veg in it?

Containers need lots more watering so have you got some water butts?

Not sure about it because ive never grown anything before, and i dont know if the soil is fine enough to grow things and im worried about bugs etc.

No i do not have any water butts yet.

As for growing veg in your garden I really think that for most things growing in the ground is better than growing in pots.

Re bugs - which ones are you worried about?

if you grow weeds, you can grow veggies .....

the soil might not be perfect right now, but give it a go, see how well things grow, keep working the ground and it'll get better and better ....

Hello Suzan and welcome. Bugs are a necessary part of gardening I'm afraid and you will still get them, even in pots and containers.
Over the years I have become accustomed to them,but when I started many years ago I had an absolute horrow of spiders, even in the house. Mind you, having said that I have never allowed one to be killed, it's not their fault they are creepy!
Ants, ah now there's another thing. I can take them in the garden but come into the house and it's WAR!!
Good luck, get some spuds in your ground as soon as you can and away you go.
No need to dig too deeply for spuds. Make a hole and drop them in. Just make sure that as the green shoots appear you cover them with soil. It protects from frost in the early part of the year and stops any potatoes too near the surface from turning green.

The only way to find out is to try Just make a list of what you like to eat, then buy the seeds, then plant them

I'm being silly, but I teach a class of 12 eight year olds who scream when they see a worm. Well they used to: now they have progressed to putting their hands into frogspawn and handling newts

Me, I hate ants, mozzies and maggots and, worst of all, flying ants: they really make me shudder. However, they are all part of nature.
You'll have to accept that if you're growing food, there's going to be critters coming round who want to eat that food
