My tray has 40 modules and currently there is more than one seedling per module. I haven't looked closely recently so I'm not sure how tall they are - I don't expect to be dibbing them into holes for a while.

I've just done some more Googling and found another forum where plenty of people were saying they never got their leeks to pencil thickness before dibbing them in and still got a good crop. So I think I am going to thin them to one per module and then when they get about 20cm tall they can be dibbed into 15cm holes. If that doesn't work then I will try a deeper tray next year. If all I get is a crop of baby leeks then they should still taste good. I like experimenting but it's a long time before you get the result!

the 40 cell modules are very small! i normally only use the 24 cell modules (for other veggies, not for leeks!) or the 15 cell modules for sweetcorn / beans ..... i rarely (if ever) use the 40 cell modules these days

you have 40 leeks, why not plant a few out, plant a few more in deeper pots etc, and see what happens? you don't need to experiment with the whole batch, just a few .... they'll all grow, but you'll get different results ....

That's a good point about the 40 modules being small. Books talk about using a module tray but don't say what size. The depth is the same though. If I find time I will try planting in different combinations and compare. I've also got the leeks sown in the ground so these should grow to pencil size before I transplant.

The modules I use are 12 holes (or is it ten?)
Anyways, only about an inch deep
