Tray drainage

Hi guys hope this does not sound to stupid a question

As I am growing in containers I have been placing my containers on growbag trays filled with gravel to conserve water but have found in all this rain they are swamped! Should I have put some drainage holes in the trays?

Drill a few holes at the same level as the top of the gravel. This way you can control the level of water that remains in the tray. Don't drill them near any stengthening flanges or webs on the trays so you can apply tape or sealant should you wish to block them up later. Easy peasy. Cheers, Tony.

little tip
heat the drill bit with a flame, lighter or blow torch or something as drilling thin plastic normally shatters but warm bits leave a perfect hole....

If you intend to use the drill bit for other purpose's then don't heat it up. It will loose its 'temper' and in future go blunt at the drop of a hat. Thats why engineers use cooling oil. You will only need small holes so a hot 6" nail will work just fine.

Whoops, what I meant to say was it will 'temper' the drill bit causing it to lose hardness.

I had all of my non tender seed pots stood in a tray outside. I got fed up with trying to tip out the water without tipping out the pots so have taken them all out.

Could you not do the same. Drill holes in them this year, you may regret it if we get a proper drought next year.

a small bit of tubing to siphon it off might work...
