Planting florence fennel alone

I just read that fennel should be planted alone, as its' root secretes chemicals which inhibit growth of other plants. Have you found that to be true?

It's just that I sowed mine in a raised bed which has a whole myriad of stuff planted in it, strawberries and spinach and chard and purslane being the closest neightbours, and I don't want to move it if it's not really necessary.

Sorry, I really don't know the answer to this............. I just thought that Flo had done something terrible while I had a night off and this was to be her punishment. I was about to start a campaign group. 'Save the Fennel One'!!

it's a bit early for fennel really, it has a tendency to bolt in the sun - HA!! - or if it's hot. In fact, it just has a tendency to bolt full-stop, but less likely to if it's sown in June...
no idea about the death to other plants thing though sorry....

If it was true then wouldn't there be some advice on the seed packet?

Nothing in any of my gardening books suggests Fennel is detrimental to other crops. I am trying Fennel for the first time. I got some May sown seedlings in the blowaway and by June I hope to have a space for them.

Afraid I don't know what it said on the packet, as I got the seeds from a generous grape - *waves at BroadRipple* - but once I read about the incompatibility (with everything!), I hoped it might be one of those things that could be true under so and so conditions and lucky me had somehow escaped. Or something.

I wonder if grape Florence Fennel knew she was considered, by some, to be toxic to everything in her radius

I've just looked at my pack of fennel seeds and there's nothing on there that suggests planting them away from other things.

I planted my Florence fennel next to my swedes last year. It was my first time for fennel and I had the best swedes I've ever had, just finished eating them.

Hmm, I planted some of my swedes next to the fennel last year and they grew to twice the size of the ones I planted in a different part of my allotment and they tasted great, too. The celeriac planted on the other side of the fennel, however, was a very different story...
