  • Fungus in raised bed?

    Hi,

I noticed what appears to be some sort of fungus in my raised bed where my sweetcorn is planted. It's currently covered by a blow-away but I wondered if this is a problem at all.

I've looked online and can't find anything that resembles it and it's been too wet to get out with my camera so a description will have to suffice for now.

**update** as if by the magical powers of the interweb, I've stumbled accross what I believe it is - Rhizopus:

Rhizopus arrhizus (images of British biodiversity)

They are very thin white shoots like watercress or something, about 3-5cm tall and at the top is a head (like a match stick) which is a black sticky liquid.
Can anyone tell me if this will be a serious problem and how best to tackle it?

    Thanks,
    Duncan

It sounds like the sweetcorn is rotting - have the individual plants got green leaves on or are they just seeds still?
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

if it's covered by a blowaway then you're giving it the conditions it needs i.e. damp, dark, condensation, warmth, to live.
take the blowaway off, cover the individual plants with a cloche [think pop bottle] if you're worried about them.
Check your soil/mulch too, thick mulch is good, but so thick you drown the plants is probably not good It will thrive in damp dark conditions, so take those away and you should be ok.
