Hi I have moved to a new house which was unoccupied for a number of years and have inherited a large amount of shrubs and bushes. Most of them I have managed to identify - lots were saplings or weeds, but this one is stumping everyone. Hope you can help - its about 3ft at the moment and doesnt appear to be on the verge of flowering.

It looks a bit like goat willow to me. Are the underside of the leaves white? If it is it gets huge.

My neighbours have one which is the bane of my life. It casts dense shade and is the meeting place for all the aphids in the Southeast and sucks up all moisture from the soil. Fortunately they did prune hard late last summer and it's taking time to recover. Could be due to some shoots "falling off" when I was up a ladder near it with my loppers ... Oops.
NMorris, can I suggest you get rid of it/ them.Comment

Thank you all so much. I am going out with a fork tomorrow and attacking it with vigour. What with bindweed, horsetail, ground elder and brambles - all i need now is a monster goatwillow! It is amazing how nature took hold in the space of only two years. Coming from a postage stamp garden to a 1/3rd of an acre has been a bit of a shocker. Mother nature is putting up a battle but I am determined to tame her.Comment

the fun thing is having the unexpected pop up - I have the most beautiful peonies which had been completely obscured by undergrowth when I viewed the house, this time last year, but having dug out a skip load of brambles they are now blooming! My husband says I have become a gardening bore but I dont care, it takes my mind off work and is great fun (apart from the weeds)Comment
