  • Grass Mulching

As I had to cut the lawn last night I thought I would have a try at mulching with the clippings.

I placed a layer of about 1 inch deep onto my raised bed, mainly around my leeks (leaving space around the leek for it to grow) and watered it down.

Now I am having second thoughts - have I done right?

What I really don't want it to make a breeding ground for more slugs and snails.

That inch of grass will rapidly decompose. I use a lot of mulches (this year I'm clipping the weeds too, and leaving them on the soil as a mulch) and they don't offer a great home to a slug, because they rot down so quickly.

Where I get most slugs is under black plastic, or under planks of wood

Then I turn the wood over, and salt all the slugs hiding underneath, mwa-hahahahahaha

Thanks Bren and 2S - I feel a bit better now.

I won't have to race home tonight and scrape it all off after all

I shall have to ask the neighbours to save their clippings for me too - they already think I'm a little bit strange so this should seal it for them

Be sure to ask them if their grass has been treated with weed killer before you use it

Just make sure they haven't used any weedkiller on their lawn.

Good point Redser and Rusty - I hadn't thought of that.

Then again, with most of my neighbours cutting the lawn is about as far as they go, horticulturally speaking.

I get many inquisitive looks when I am in the front tending my raised beds, and loads of very strange looks when I am creeping around the garden with a torch at dusk on my nightly 'Slug Patrol'.

Only a couple have actually asked me what I am planting, and one of those was more interested in the trellis I had put up to screen our patio than what I had growing up it.

SWMBO has no real interest in the garden either - her one contribution this year was to scatter sow salad crops into large pots for me - unfortunately she got carried away and scatter sowed a whole pack of jalapenos as well.

The salad is doing well, but the jalapenos are taking their time to make an appearance - either that or the ninja slugs got to them first!

It's a good job that we like our chillis - we may be inundated come the end of summer!

... and don't use any that's got dandelion/grass seed in it either.
