I have several books but my favourite is Roger Phillips' "Mushrooms"
This is the one that I have but there seem to be newer editions phillips roger - mushrooms and other fungi of great britain and europe - AbeBooks
There is a linked website too Rogers Mushrooms | Mushroom Pictures & Mushroom Reference

I agree with Veggie Chicken 'Roger Phillips' very good

Frankly, if you are wanting to eat some, I suggest that you find someone to show you rather than trying to pick with just a book as a guide.

I would recommend you get several books and cross reference between them! when ever IDing mushrooms make sure you also do a spore print! as some can be almost identical and can only be distinguished by their spores! You also want to note down where you found them, and what they were growing on, as this will help in identifying them.
The two main books that I use are:
Field Guide to Mushrooms and other Fungi of Britain and Europe -
Field Guide to Mushrooms and Other Fungi of Britain and Europe: Amazon.co.uk: Michael(ed Eppinger: Books
and, How to Identify Edible Mushrooms by Patrick Harding -
How to Identify - Edible Mushrooms: Amazon.co.uk: Patrick Harding, Tony Lyon, Gill Tomblin: Books

As a general rule if your not 100% certain then don't risk it especially if its anything like the amanitas! Try to find some obvious tasty mushrooms like oyster mushrooms, blewits or chanterels to start with, and if what you've got in front of you doesn't fully match whats in the book then its probably something different as there are a Lot of different mushrooms out there, hence the need to check between books!
          Good luck and happy foraging!
