i have a courgette growing . it is about 4inches long, how big does it have to reach before i pick it
    TIA

I usually try to pick at about six inches (young and tender). Beware, if you turn your back it will turn into a marrow overnight.

Depends on what size you want it to be before you eat it but, if it was mine, I'd probably pick it now (and eat it raw) but I would say 4 to 6 inches is a good size. Once they start you'll have trouble keeping up with the picking so I reckon that you'll have some much bigger than that eventually anyway.

I wish I had courgette plants!! argh. Mine have all been eaten. (over 20).

I tend to pick around 6-8 inches, depending on if it's for a salad, or going in a main course.

I can't stand them courgette things. Never had a fresh one and wouldn't know what is the best way to cook/eat them anyway? OMG how ignorant of me!

You'll learn Chris! They are so versatile you have to grow them. Eat the little ones raw like cucumber, bigger ones grilled or sliced and fried in batter, larger still in ratatouille or stuffed. I could go on, and on, and on........

I usually just pick them out if they get served on my plate! Always found them to be gooey, mushy and weird tasting.

I had one sliced in a ham sandwich and was much nicer than cucumber, plus no heartburn.

I'm still waiting for my first courgette of the season hopefully the slugs will leave at least one of them alone.

I had friends who used to let a couple of them get huuuuuge - marrows +. Because I like to slice in half lengthways. Scoop out the seeds ( and keep if you are growing them).
Then scoop out half the thickness of the flesh of the courgette, and steam it.
Add cooked rice (brown is great) cooked pork/chicken mince, add herbs (which ever herbs you like), add garlic (to everything here), we also add cajun powder instead of herbs sometimes to get a little 'bite' in it. Of course if you'd grown chilli's you'd use them instead.

While I'm putting together the stuffing I gently steam the two shells of courgettes in a pan with a little water in the bottom. Don't let them get too soft.

Tip water out of the pan, put courgette shells back in. Stuff with the stuffing (there's aways more than will fit back in so that's leftovers for tomorrow) sprinkle with grated cheese, and put in oven to melt cheese and let the shells soften slightly.

So a large courgette, a small amount of cooked rice and cooked mince, and you can feed a family of four. If the shells are nice and soft you can eat them as well, if a bit tough then just eat out of them.

Do a vegetarian one, by adding something tasty like mashed/baked pumpkin or sweet potato. The cajun or chilli is nice on the vege one esp.

They are good things to grow and cook if you know what to do with them

                              I also have a courgette
Just the one I think, maybe a smaller one but this one is about 5 inches long maybe 6.
I have never eaten one before either
                              Will it poison me?
I guess I should pick it soon?
I will try it in a salad like cucumber and also try frying it with my fried breakfast!! (sounds disgusting lol )
