Hello *Debris Netting*

Hi everyone my first post so be gentle with me please

We have 2 allotments and the plot next to us has not been worked for a number of years and the chap who does have it at present has done nothing apart from provide excuses to the site manger who lets him get away with it anyway his weeds are 2-3 foot tall so have decided to put up debris netting and my question is this is the netting better on posts or on pins ?

Hello Nigel/FG and welcome from me. I'm confused too (as usual)! Are you thinking of putting up a sort of fence/barrier to stop weed seeds getting onto your plot? Tell us a little more please

Hi. I assumed you were talking about making a fence but confused about 'pins'. If it's for a fence it's grand stuff and much cheaper (if not free from building sites) than 'proper' wind break.

I read it as a sort of fence, but from debris netting. If so, I'd staple it to posts.

Are you trying to create a vertical fence against weed seed? interesting idea... dandilion, grounsel etc floats couch, bindweed and buttercup creep in from the edges also, given weed seed can be viable in soil for many years; I fear it would be too long to see much improvement.

....or cover your plot for same purpose?....Mypex is the thing...debris netting would just really grow in and ultimately, it would ruin the land if you could not get it off.

See if you can offer to strim off neighbours weeds. Might even be able to get a bottle of wine for doing it if your a good salesman.

Weeds that cause problems should be dealt with. It's not just you who they'll affect either.

By 'Pins' I assume you mean 'Road Pins' which is what they use on Building sites. Great if you have some, as they are easily removed. Small timber posts and staples are a little more permanent.

Personally, I would go through the Committee, and contact the plot-holder to discuss what his plans are, and offer to help. Explain that the weed seeds are a real nuisance to all the other plot-holders, and that he is being unfair by his inaction. Maybe tell him that you've heard someone else is after his plot! That should get him moving...

hi and welcome to the forum,the only good putting up a net barrier is,it will hold them back from the mass encroching on you plot,but will not stop the seeds ,as they fly over a large area,depending on the wind,plus the weeds WILL eventually grow through,rendering your net no good,someone on our site has put up net curtaining,it only looks tydier,if you have access to what you call pins,as in the metal rods with hooks on,as used on show grounds for quick barriers,or the plastic version,that is much easier,but you will need to anchor it down on the bottom with something,if you have a fence already up,is it possible you could wire tie,string tie,it to that,you also need to consider it acting as a sail/kite in the wind,

Sorry for not making it clear I want to put up a debris net has a fence between me and the weed neighbour.

Also I can't complain to the neighbour because we don't have a Committee it's run by the council with a site manger who is useless and does very little :-(

Last time I went over her head and complained about the conditions of the plots near us and to request the water tap we was promised a year ago she found out and was not happy that we went over her head :-(

I recently visited a friends allotment site that is run by a Committee and WOW it was like walking on to a film set everything was so tidy and pretty and it was a pleasure to visit.

We have worked our socks off this last year on two full plots (side by side) to get them into shape from scratch but it seems the rest of the site is allowed to look like something from hell with abandoned plots and 2-3ft weeds everywhere and only being there a year I feel if I go above her head again and complain then this may reflect badly upon us :-(

Any suggestions would be great please.

I'd keep going over the lazy Tart's head until she starts doing the job that she's presumably paid to do!

But, I'm like that!


If she then starts making life difficult, I'd ask her why she couldn't be bothered to get her arris in gear to keep on top of those that 'don't' but has the time and energy to victimise those that 'do'!

It'll be a psychological barrier, but it will have very little effect on the weeds: they'll be blown in on the wind, and creep under the soil

That's very unusual: allotments are MEANT to look like a shanty town

2-3ft weeds everywhere

The best, most effective, thing you can do is to go round with a pair of sharp shears and deadhead those flowering weeds: weeds aren't a problem until they're seeding, so catch them at that point and you'll save yourself a lot of grief (or 7 years' weeding)

Ok Film set was maybe a little OTT (sorry) I just think I got excited after seeing my friends allotment site and knowing what poor condition our site is in. :-)
