      Thanks all for all the brilliant replies. Definitely food for thought there - I'll reply in more detail later with my plans. I might start a thread on the garden as it progresses!

          all the plans are useless until you get some serious nourishment into the depleted soil,those conifers will have sucked it dry of any goodness,and stuff put on this time of year will be carried down by the worms if you put several inches of mulch on,dont make just one plan,do half a dozen,then in dicussion with a gardening neighbour you will also find out what does or doesnt do well in your area,you might end up with a mix from several plans,but you wont be buying plants and then throwing them out because they wont grow,whatever you decide to do ,enjoy, and the very best of luck......
