You really don't need to keep watering and turning your heap.

If you keep turning it it will never heat up and compost properly. Just add a good mix of things to the heap, cover it and let it get on with it.

Did you really buy cat litter just to add to your compost? Don't you have a cat?

No, don't put leaves in the compost heap: they decompose in a different way, so really ought to be kept separate. Store them in chicken wire bins, or black plastic sacks

I do mine when I empty the thing, maybe once or twice a year

The first compost heap I set up was on concrete and all I did was just chuck everything in and mixed it once or twice. Snails, slugs and bugs all found their way there. After reading up on how it should be done, for example; putting it on soil, having the right mix of everything, positioning it in the sun etc, I was technically doing everything wrong but one day when I decided to move the compost I was so surprised at how amazing my compost had turned out! It actually looked like the stuff we buy! I have now moved to a new house with two new compost bins and I have just plopped them straight onto concrete too. Fingers crossed all will work out again!
