I always thought you should do it in the evening so the mid day sun does not cause problems with water and sun on The leaves. Another reason I do it in the evening is I get up and go straight to work so I do not have time to water in the morning. The plants do not seem to be affected by this technique.

I am also an evening person at this time of year. Don't like the sun on freshly watered veggies also it (the sun) can evaporate water meaning you have to water more often.

Your soil will benefit more from an evening watering but then so will the slugs and snails!!! I water as and when is necessary, its generally in the evening as with school runs in the morning very little else is possible first thing, and the allotment is to far away for a 5 minute visit.I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

You can water anytime of day if the plant if suffering. Try to avoid watering the foliage as if its a hot day this can burn the leaves.
Some plants are more susceptible to burning than others my acer palmatum looks much better now I've moved it where it doesn't get early morning sun when there is still dew on the leaves.I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

I water the GH whenever I have a watering can full of water!
I keep one in the kitchen and run water into it before its warm enough to do the washing up. I wash veg in a bowl - that goes in the can. When its full, something in the GH has a drink. I find it impossible to do anything by the book
