  • Short cucumbers and tomatoes flowering/fruiting.

    Hi,

This year is really my first full year growing veg/fruit.

For some reason they have all started to flower and fruit at only about 2' tall, normally they are atleast 3' if not 4' before this happens.
Now while I was weeding the cucumbers I noticed they have started to develop flower stems, only these are barely taller then 1'.
They are growing in a unheated greenhouse and went in around the 8th of May give or take a few days. I've been feeding them once a week since they started to set flowers.

Admittedly I did go with different varieties to watch we have grown in the past, but I'm a bit worried.

The varieties are Femspot F1 for the cucumbers then a mix of lemon plum, tigerella and cerise (from Premierseeds on ebay).

Should I be worried or will they just be like my broadbeans which flowered at 1' tall, but continued to grow to full height?

In some ways it's good that they have started to set fruit while they are fairly short. Means you won't have 3 feet of wasted space.

Both tomatoes and cucumbers carry on growing and fruiting throughout the season, so I wouldn't worry.

I am a bit old fashioned with cumbers, I always take the first flowers of to give the plant a chance to grow.

My tomatoes are the opposite. Mine are about 3 feet and only 2 trusses formed. Quickly running out of greenhouse roof space!
