Too late for tomato seedlings kept in seedling tray for too long?

Afternoon all,

I was just wondering if I can still plant out my tomatoes as I have left them in the seed tray a bit too long (they are quite leggy and some have very short roots for their size although I am not sure if this is due to the difficulty and damage when separating them) - I have read somewhere about putting in a portion of the stem where the rots will grow out from to give them a good start somewhere?

Pot them up deep, up to the first set of real leaves. They should grow roots from the stems. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying!!

By deep VC means something along these lines.

I was asked that very question last year.

I friend of mine grows palm trees from seed and he gave them to me. I have tried to find more but failed at this time.

This video helped me understand how the Tomato grows its root system. I suspect this is the case for most plants from which you can take a cutting and root it, though I wont be sure until I pull things up at the end of the season. I also recommend other videos by this guy, lots of useful info there.

Good find. They are the same size, I suspect not quite as sturdy but it is the size that is the great thing about them. They allow you to pot on very deep without using loads of compost and more importantly room.

I use them for my cumbers to. Start off with a seedling in about 2" of compost and then top up the pot as it grows, gives good strong plants.

I'd like them for my toms and cues but at 79p a pot it's a little on the pricey side.
