You can steal quite a lot of space if the plants have access to food and water.

As a for instance I grow 9 full size calabrese in a 1 square metre x 200mm deep bed.

Wow! I didn't know that was possible. Is that a particular variety of Calabrese?

The variety I grow is Green Magic, first for taste and then for productivity. After the main head is cut you get loads of side shoots usually the equivalent of another main head.

Pic one shows what looks like a head of calabrese, the second one shows the truth florets off one plant.

Thanks very much for the reply and especially the photos. I may give it a go seeing as they can get by in so little space. I don't have a lot of growing space but it'd be nice to fit in some calabrese. Happily planning what to plant next year; hours of fun...

Heck, I've been a long time replying to this, haven't I, Veggie? Errr, I watered in the evenings or in the mornings if I'd time. Now that we've moved on a bit from this, do you reckon it would do any good to keep watering the Celeriac to try and bulk it up to a decent size? It's still a bit itchy (in the main) so I'm a bit lost as to what I can do to fix it...

You're excused Herbs because it was a difficult question
So is your's about watering celeriac as this is my first year growing it - it scares me with its shrunken heads appearance
I'm sure someone who doesn't have these hangups will be along shortly
