  • What questions should I ask when inspecting a potential new veg allotment patch?

    Afternoon all,

I am thinking of renting my own vegetable patch after helping out my neighbour whilst he has a bad back. I called the person from the council and now have a meeting with him to view some plots on Monday at the same allotment my neighbours patch.

I also found out that through the allotment federation I can get access to lots of bulk compost quite cheaply and get it delivered.

Thus I was wondering what questions should I ask so that I can make the most of my newly acquired veg patch? Anything that will make my time on the plot 'easier' (such as the above) will be most gratefully appreciated!

    Many thanks,

    Samuel

Have a chat with some of the allotment tenants on that site. They will be able to point out any difficulties on the site and be able to tell you of any problems with the vacant plots you may be offered.

You're familiar with the site because you've been helping out there - so, what do you know about the water supply? Does each plot have its own tap or do you have to carry it a long way - or is there none provided?
Then look at shading - try to avoid a plot thats under trees or in the shadow of buildings.
Any chance of there being a shed or greenhouse or fruit trees already on the plot?

When I got mine, I asked what had been grown where last time the plot was in use. I obsessively practiced rotation on the little plot I had in my garden and wanted to do the same on the lottie.

Type of soil is always useful to know but if you've been helping your neighbour out, you'll probably have a good idea of this and will know what tends to succeed.

Also ask the council man about rules and regs for putting structures on your plot. If you want to build a greenhouse or polytunnel, there might be a maximum size for these.
        Are y'oroight booy?
