  • Potatoes - help cant eat them quick enough

My potatoes are all ready and the greenery is all collapsing. We are eating them as quickly as we can but so is something else, they are getting little holes drilled into them.. I want to dig them up and store them but I am not sure how I should do that. I seem to think that i should put them in some sort of hessian sack, but where do I keep them after that, and how long will they be edible?

Anyone able to advise. I have quite a lot to store.

If you want to keep spuds, you need to plant maincrop varieties.

I keep mine all in the ground until I need them, but if you have critters eating yours (probably keel slugs and/or wireworm) then they need to come out.

Spuds need to be stored in the dark, and in breathable (ie not plastic) containers. Hessian or paper sacks are traditional. Mice will eat them, so make sure you have traps around the place if using a garage/shed.

The £ shop often has potato bags for sale, with a drawstring for hanging up.

If you are going to store them then you need to leave them to dry for a day or so before you start packing them into sacks.

Don't wash them, just brush the worst of the soil off them.

Store them somewhere cool, dark and dry. Good luck.
