Onions for 2014

I have jst planted my onion seeds so I can plant out and overwinter once i have dug up my potatoes. I have never grown onions from seed before. How big should I let the seedling get too before planting out and how do I protect them over the winter?

Firstly you will need to establish what variety of onion seed they are.. Many are only sown towards the end of the year and only planted outside next Spring.

what most peeps do is,plant sensui overwintering onion sets,from october time,they only really take of growing in the spring,we only plant a few dozen as they are not keepers,then plant your summer grower in the spring if using setts,if growing from seed,start off aprox end of the year,have a look at the thread on( growing onions from seed)

If you do want to grow onions from seed NOW, then there are varities that should be sown around now..I have sown F1Hi-Ball this week..

Thanks for the responses. I have planted two varieties from seeds and I shall also plant some onion sets and see which is the best
