These are aerial tubers and these will form on any variety if the stem is damaged preventing the downward flow of carbohydrate to the new tubers. Sometimes the stem gets mechanical damage and at other times the damage is caused by pests/diseases.
These did have some cracking at the bottom of the stem and had been looking a bit rough for a while but I thought it was aphid damage until I harvested them.

So there's nothing to say that you couldn't plant those tubers - or am I missing something?
What were the spuds like - or haven't you dug them up yet?

Well they were like little pots with leaves coming out - not like potatoes. having got the reply I decided not to plant them as I have no where to keep them going over winter. It would be logical to think they'd grow though if the plant is producing them in response to not making below ground tubers.
