  • Where to get freebies

I have recently taken over a plot and it appeals to my ... Tight side!

I am working on trying to get some freebie pallets as it seems they are great for construction I.e. compost bins. Hoping to find some companies who need to get rid of some. Also got my eyes on some nice big cardboard boxes out the back of a local bike shop.

I'm curious, what else should I look for and where do people look?

      Hi there,

I googled some wood reclaim yards and found one close by that gives away pallets for free. I also got cheap wood for raised beds from them. I think they are all charities but that might just be mine. Here's the national website: http://www.communitywoodrecycling.org.uk/. I've also asked at houses that clearly have building work going on...

I've used freecycle to get a lot of stuff too...like compost bins, garden furniture, seedlings, an old door that became a cold frame, water barrels etc.

      Good luck!

      LF

Glad to be of help! 😀

Oh and make an effort with your allotment community! Mine have been awesome...from advice to plants and general friendship. I've given stuff away where I've over planted seeds and got other things in return.

And you could check out other allotment sites, as different sites often have open days and plant sales.

I discovered today that my site has an agreement with a local garden centre for a 50% discount on plants. You can't ask for advice ( as we are meant to be experts), but ask if your site has any relationships with local garden centres. It could be a potential source of cheap fruit trees/ bushes etc.

Have people had much luck asking for pallets around at local factories?
