  • Should the young pea plants I have just planted be flowering now?

    Afternoon all,

I bought some pea plants and put them in about a week ago and they have started flowering already (they are about 20-30cm tall). On the label it said I could plant this variety in September. Is this normal? (I will try to take some picks and make a note of the variety).

My early peas flower about that length and then get a lot bigger. Wouldn't think you have long left in the season so I guess you need it to be getting on with it...

I have the impression (from the planting time on the label) that my peas would over winter - is this now a misconception? It does say on the label it can handle the cooler seasons.

Peas are cool weather crops, rather than hot or cold weather crops - so if you planted them now they will try to flower and produce peas.

For over wintering they're not sown usually sown until October or beginning of November.

You're in London, which is a lot warmer than most of the rest of the UK.

Planting times are general, and vague: you need to adapt them to your local conditions, ie plant them when it's cooler. October or November, as Thelma says
