Absolute complete beginner - books?

Hi there,

I'm a complete novice gardener, but I cannot wait to get started when I move into my new house in a few weeks (exciting!!).

My (hopefully!) green fingers are getting a bit itchy, and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any good books for reference (particularly something like a month-by-month guide, and maybe something on container planting).

I'm most interested in growing vegetables, herbs and weeds - any pointers or recommendations gratefully received!

(My itchy green fingers bought a gardening journal today....eeek!)

Welcome, this is actualy the place where you will learn most of what you need.
As for growing weeds, they need no help, being entirely capable of growing everywhere.

While your waiting and itching try you tube, type in allotments and you will get a wealth of video blogs which keep me entertained for hours on end. Alan titmarsh has a you tube series "how to be a gardener, the basics" which is very helpful.

Dont be afraid to ask questions on here however silly, I do it all the time. A good description of where you are and what your garden is like (in your profile) will help members to help you. Good luck.

My reference book for all things vegi is The new Vegetable & Herb Expert by Dr D G Hessayon. Not expensive and full of info.

But as Bill said you will be hard put to beat The Vine, members here grow in a variety of ways from allotments to containers, from totally organic to totally unorganic so you will get a variety of opinions to work from.

And no question is silly if you don't know the answer so ask away.

Thanks, I wouldn't have thought to look on youtube. I have a couple of "preparation" questions, I'm just trying to find the right bit to ask them in!

As for growing weeds, my last attempt didn't go too well. That may have had something to do with the spider infestation in the greenhouse meaning I never went in there again...shudder!
