  • late bulb planting help!!!

    hi all
just wondered if anyone can advise me. I bought 2 packs of mixed bulbs, crocus, narcissus etc and also yellow daffodil bulbs to plant now so that they appear in spring. I have usually put them all in by now but have not had the time.
the daffodils will be ok I think as it say's up to December, but the other packs say 'autumn planting'. am I wasting my time planting them now do you think?
thanks in advance. I live in Hertfordshire.

According to Gardner's Question Time on the radio yesterday, you can either plant in the ground now as it is still relatively warm, being careful not to damage any embryonic roots; or plant in pots then plant out later.

The consensus was to bung 'em in the ground assuming you are not waterlogged.

Plant them - what have you got to lose? If you don't plant them they will rot in the packs.

I'd plant them all like Hazel says but if you're worried you could always plant half of them in pots and leave then in a cold frame.

Autumn planting is a bit vague but November counts as autumn in my book so i would plant them now as long as your soil looks okay I.e. not frozen or waterlogged.

As Rustylady says, plant when you can. Last February, after a week of frost it had turned a bit mild (4c) and although there was still some frost in the ground, I planted a bag of 50 tulips, and had a very good display, and again this year I have tulips and daffs. still to plant.
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Ive just planted up some Hyacinths today, which I forgot about. They are in a big pot in the cold greenhouse.

They're very tough. You might lose some to rot if they get cold & waterlogged, but most likely they'll flower a bit late, then come up in 2015 onwards at normal times

I've planted them at new year in the past when I've been particularly dis organised and although they've been a bit late the first year they've been fine.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
