  • Hi all new to the forum

Hi all I was offered a allotment yesterday . I'm new to growing and anyone got any useful hint or tips? Me and my partner and little one will be on there tidying it up tomorrow digging, and sorting out the run down shed which is there now .. Would hopefully want some chickens on there eventually once I've got it up and running

    Take care all Luke fenbuff

Start off chillies and tomatoes indoors if you have a heated growing space available.
Plan out your beds - you can order raised beds kits if you need them easy to assemble - I used greenfingers for mine.
This month - it depends on the weather but you may get some onion and garlic going.
In a month or so think about broad beans.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Yep,deffo get onions sets & garlic in now, garlic in particular needs a reasonable spell of proper cold weather to for individual cloves.

Welcome to the vine. You should find lots of help one here, you only need to ask. What I would suggest is make an initial plan where you want things to go including things like where you want your chicken to go even if you won't be getting then straight away. You can change it later if you want but it will give you something to focus your work on and you can always change it later.

As for raised beds you will you find many opinions on what to make them from and it partly depends on how much you want to spend, most people use some form of recyled material. What pretty much everyone will agree on is that you should be able to reach the middle without standing on the bed.

Hello Fenbuff and welcome to the Grapevine. Pull up a chair and have a search through the New Shoots forum, you will find lots of advice to new plotholders there, that may help you.

Ground is way to cold & wet for spuds, got a while to go yet before sowing direct to soil

                              Welcome,

As its your first year consider growing spuds in 45ltr pots, you can then move them around if your plans change, If you can get old scaffolding planks they are ideal for raised beds, or second hand decking boards. The main thing is to read read read all you can on this forum.
