Did the recent strong winds effect your young onions?

Morning all,

I planted some onion bulbs in the autumn and the recent strong winds managed to, not lift them out but very nearly uprooted them (so there is a large hole around the young onion plant).

I was surprised that the winds would have such an effect considering the leaf/stem of the young onions is quite thin.

Anyone else have this happen to their onions?

Hi Samuel - it's more likely to be the birds pecking at the top of the sets and pulling them out, I would have thought. I find the same when I plant garlic cloves.

My onions look distinctly unhappy, I think they took a battering from the strong winds and driving rain. They are still firmly in the ground though, I think I go with Hazel's explanation for yours.

This is the first year I have planted over wintering onions. Not had a problem with wind uprooting them but they are reasonable protected.

Yeah I have heard of the birds pulling them out but I assumed that was when they were young - mine have around 10-15cm of growth on them now.
