  • Any ideas where I can get lots of cardboard packaging from for free?

    Morning all,

Just taken on another plot and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get lots of cardboard from - I will use it to act as a weed suppressant for now and will remove it when I have time to start on each section of the new plot.

I was thinking of asking fellow plot holders, maybe the local greggs near my plot and also family members. Any other ideas?

    Many thanks,

    Samuel

Your local cycle shop (Halfords) or electrical white goods retailers (Currys?). The large boxes are particularly good for suppressing weeds.

Motor bikes and scooter dealers have lots of cardboard.

I've just had a new bathroom fitted, and all the stuff came flat-packed in huge cardboard boxes.

Builders just put this stuff in skips (and then into landfill), so go round checking skips, or phone builders up, or put a note through householder's doors if you spot they're having work done.

You can't have mine, it all went up the lotty to mulch my weeds

Ikea always have LOADS of cardboard - that they actively encourage you to take and recycle.

Also worth checking any kitchen retailers in your area, everything we have delivered is covered in the stuff and as a general rule of thumb its free from dye and text of any sort and very thick. I've used loads on my plot over the years and still use it in the compost.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Cardboard to retailers is a waste product and they have to pay to have it collected. It follows that many of them will be only too happy to give it away. The best cardboard is of course the big stuff hence bike and white good retailers should be top of your list.

I have a bed covered with cardboard that was surrounding two new 10 foot lengths of oak kitchen worktop.

Now to put the cat in among the pigeons!

I've often wondered whether there are any 'nasties' in the way of chemicals in cardboard?

Mulching with carpets is supposedly bad because of chemicals leeching and ! would imagine chemicals are used in the printing process so newspapers could be bad?

I could google the answer but I prefer to upset you lot!

                        Yeah, hahahahaha

Yes, there are chemicals in the cardboard. Recently there was hoo-ha about the chemicals in cereal boxes, which are leaching into the cereal

My view is that cardboard is less bad than chemical weedkillers and I'm removing it from landfill (or preventing it being shipped to India for recycling)
