  • Fleece anyone?

I’ve planted my Broad Beans, and Runner Beans out yesterday in grow bags in my garden in Falkirk, and covered them with fleece, (having hardened them off first).

Can I leave the fleece on them, as we are expecting a chill tonight? I wont be able to tend to my lovelies, for 5 days. Will they be ok till I get back?
    Regards

The fleece will protect them but still allow them to grow and also allows water through.
Certain crops can be grown full season under fleece, so no worries there!

I grew carrots under fleece last year but because the edges were fastened down they grew through the fleece. The fleece was ruined but the carrots were lovely!

They'll love it trolleydolly. Broad beans are quite tough. Mine were planted straight into the ground in March and have never been covered with anything. They're covered in flower buds. Runner beans are a bit more tender. I planted mine too early last year and got caught with the awful weather in May after I had had to plant them out because they were so big. I had them covered in fleece for a week and they were just fine.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Fleece will do them no harm at all - just make sure that it is laid loosely over the plants so as not to restrict them.

I cover all my early seedlings/babies in fleece - I use it to keep the birds off and incase we were to have a frost - when the plants get a bit bigger I put on netting (again to keep off the pests). Hope this helps. Bernie
