Sowing into such wet ground

Hello,

I've just had my regular Gardenate email telling me what can be planted out around now. There are a few things on there that I'm planning to sow, such as beans and kohl rabi, but it seems to me madness to plant them out while it's still so unrelentingly wet. Even when the rain finally eases up, the ground will be sodden for a while.

Should I stick to my judgment and wait til the weather improves, or will they survive? I thought a half-way house was to use the tiny windowsill greenhouse I got for my birthday (hint well taken!) and get Feb/March sowing seeds going in that?

Hi, yes sow your seeds indoors in modules and plant them out later when the conditions are right.

We're on heavy clay and although this year is exceptional I can never get on my plot early in the year, so I raise pretty much everything in pots and transplant out later. It means I can sow / prick out / pot on in the evening, when it is dark / raining / cold / miserable! outside and still get on, and the plants have a couple of weeks leeway for planting out if the weather is not ideal at the correct time.

Some extra faff involved though, and it does help to have a conservatory / greenhouse with good light - and sufficient space

I have none of those things Kristen! I have a couple of likely windowsills but that's all. Looks like I'm going to be acquiring a couple more windowsill greenhouses - ALDI is doing them for £1.99 atm.

If it can't be sown in a cold frame, in a pot or in the greenhouse then wait until the soil is better.

I'd definitely wait until conditions improve - you risk seeds rotting if you sow them direct, and everything will like as not catch up anyway!

If so, then they are fine for germinating seeds, but you need to remove the plastic cover as soon as they are through or they will grow leggy.

I think you have to take them as a guide and take your own circumstances into account. If it looks to wet, mine is, then I would wait. A week or two won't be a problem. Planting in very wet ground could just mean they rot.

yes, it's sit on your hands time. It is great to get into the garden but spend your time on tidying and preparation meantime.
