I line mine with old compost sacks and make a couple of holes in - to retain the water - but mid-summer still do water twice a day (south facing wall).

I've got a couple of self watering hanging baskets which I always grow a couple of Maskotka (sp) tumbling type tomatoes in every year. Have had them for years and they're very good. Mine are in the polytunnel and I also supplement water with an inverted plastic pop bottle with a dripper on the bottom. They work really very well even though they're probably not the prettiest of designs. These aren't quite the same but the same idea - Stewart Corinthian Hanging Basket - Terracotta - Garden Mall (Great Gardens Online) Furniture, Grow Your Own, Accessories and Tools
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

For watering, I use those small kids plastic drinks bottles with the bottom removed, sunk in at the same time as planting up. The water can't run off then, goes straight to the roots.I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

Being plain idle I just line the bottom third of the basket with a plastic shopping bag only need to every two days even in high summer.

This is all really helpful everyone, thank you. Alison, I hadn't heard of self-watering baskets and I am so pleased you posted, I think they will be much better than the Easy Fill baskets. So I have just bought 4 of these (large size), this website was the cheapest I found and I got the last ones in stock:
Pair Of Garland Large Self Watering Hanging Baskets - £14.99 At Garden4less UK
They will hold the tomatoes and strawberries. I will be getting 4 Easy Fill baskets too but they will be for flowers, I think the small ones will suffice as the larger sizes make a huge display! They do look lovely though:
Easy Fill Hanging Baskets (14") x 4 LOOK Only £16.99 YES the large Ones.
