Arran pilot potatoes in containers

I bought 10 Arran pilot seed potatoes yesterday - I was planning on growing them in containers in the garden, will I be able to grow them in morrisons flower buckets or would bags be better? Also how many per bucket/bag? Thanks!

I only put one, I think they need a lot of growing room and water.
Potty is your man for spuds in pots....maybe he will tell you something different!

Oops sorry, I use black flower buckets for the odd few that I grow in pots. I'm not keen on grow bags.

I per bucket. Potato bags would take more (? 4/5) but I'm not very keen on using them either.

Watched an interesting utbe on tatties in buckets. Cut large holes in the bottom of the bucket, stand the bucket on soil, the roots go through the bucket into the soil getting more moisture & in return increasing your crop. Yes you could put the tatties direct in the soil if you are standing the pots on it but it would take up more room.

That's an interesting video, I've got an allotment too, I wonder if it you get a better result with spuds grown directly in the ground or this way? Hmm might be worth a try

I grow my first early spuds in two different types of container. First I use Morrisons black buckets 1 seed per bucket. These are put in my unheated GH and if the weather holds will be planted next week.
With Arran Pilot you will need about 10 to 12 weeks from planting till harvest dependent on the weather.
I do it this way purely because they are easy to move around when I need the GH space.

The other way I use is plastic dustbins 4 seeds per bin, these I leave longer to use both as a first early and a second early for bakers and chippers. These are usually sown a couple of weeks later to try to avoid frost, I keep the bin lids handy and if a frost is forecast pop them on until Jack disappears.

Don't forget what ever growing medium you use you will have to feed them after about 6 weeks. Make sure you have good drainage and give them plenty of water once the haulm develops, spuds are about 85% water and a lack of water will lead to a poor harvest.

Being in a rush for new tasty spuds I always succumb and harvest my first buckets a little early but you should still get a couple of good boiling's from each pot to start with. This of course will increase as the season goes on.
