Onion Sets Going Mouldy

Hi all,

This is my first post, so hope that it is in the right place.

I have planted some onion sets in modules in the greenhouse, however, I have noticed that some have started to go mouldy?

Is this because they are too damp?

Should I remove a layer of skin and plant straight into the ground now?

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the vine.

This is caused by damp and poor air circulation, i have it in some of mine. All I can tell you is what I am doing. Mine are in a greenhouse so I am opening up all the ventilation in the day and have even put them outside when it's sunny (joke). I think they will recover as it gets drier. i dont think peeling them will do anything but harm to be honest. We have onion experts on here who no doubt will reply in due course.

will stay away from peeling then and try and get some ventilation going in the GH.

I dust them with sulfur to kill mildew when growing, sulfur kills the mould instantly, so should work anytime before planting as well

Ventilation as Bill says...
Not sure how many are affected on you (hopefully not too many), but, for me, if I see anything like that on onions at any stage, it's into the bin with them..Too easy to spread whether in ground or not, and they are cheap as chips to buy seed or sets, so not worth taking the chance imo..
