  • Earthing up tatties.....

I have some tatties in a compost bag...

Could someone please explain the earthing up thing properly to me. I did what i thought that meant (covering up the stalks a bit was actually the depth of my knowledge) but don't want to muck it up when they are growing so well.

They aren't flowering as yet but are definately growing at a rate of knots!

Covering up the stalk a bit just about sums it up! As long as there's a bit of green still poking up they'll romp away again.

Hi there noidea! welcome to the vine! Heres the guide to earthing up ala "the allotment handbook" by andi clevely - a super buy, by the way! " earthing up is the technique of mouding up soil around a plant with a rake or hoe. In windy situations tall plants like brussels and broccoli are more stable if their stems are earthed up in autumn and firmed tight. sweetcorn benefits from the same attention and will develop buttress roots in the fresh layer of soil for additional support. The stems of potatoes are earthed up several times partly to stimulate growth but mainly to prevent light from turning tubers green and inedible. Crops like trench celery and sweet fennel are blanched by earthing up to keep their stems pale, crisp and tender. For best results always earth up while the soil is moist and clear any weeds as you go".
      Hope this helps. Bernie

        Many thanks!

I earthed up a bit more today.... they appear to be quite happy in their inside out compost bag!
