  • Which is the best multi purpose compost

I am considering getting either Westland multi purpose with John Innes or Miracle Grow all purpose. Or can you recommend any other? My daughter is going to Homebase tonight and is going to pick me some up.

Homebase are doing 4 bags for 3, on MPC, (70 L) , and topsoil, and blended horse manure, so good value. Their own brand stuff, but there are offers on other I think.

Asda also doing 3 for £10.00

I bought Westland Jack Magic from Homebase earlier this year and found it to best the best MPC I have bought for many a season.

I just buy whatever is cheap, and water/feed according to what's in the bag (i.e. monitor retention, and adjust routine accordingly). Every batch is different anyway, depending on what was used for compost in that blend. No composts are of a fixed quality IMHO

If you are looking for a peat free compost, I always use New Horizon MPC.

I am using Verve (B&Q) Sowing and Cutting Compost, mixed with a little Vermiculite for seed sowing. It is on offer for 50litre bags,2 for £10. It has 50 percent peat mixed with coir.It seems to dry out a bit quickly so I am using capilliary matting where possible to avoid having to water the surface of my seed trays.

Homebase has 20% off gardening stuff this weekend in case that helps make a decision.

I love New Horizon but it's expensive so homebase own brand does me if I need some.

I am this year using Westlands Jack's Magic as its a traditional blend of peat compost, and so far looks really good
