  • New to planting! Got Greenhouse Got Seeds!

    Hi,

As per my previous thread (http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ect_77890.html)on gardening help, I really want to start growing some food and flowers! And use my green house to it's potential!

Right so I've inherited loads of gardening equipment and utensils that's been left in the greenhouse, I'm pretty confident I've got enough to make a good start! So I've bought some beetroot, peppers, tomatoes and chilli seeds. The instructions on the back seem pretty simple but I fear it can't really be that simple?

This is my plan for all four of them:

    1. Put some compost in these bad boys

    2. Grow them on the window ledge in the house for a couple of weeks
    3. Put them outside whilst I go to work and bring them in at night for a week
    4. Then put them in deeper pots (Should I just use the pot guide they've put on the instructions?) put in the greenhouse full time.
    5. And I'm now without a plan haha...How long do they take to grow after they've been out and how will I know they'll need to be harvested

Once I've mastered those, I'd like to do garlic, onions and potatoes oh and a herb garden!

As always will love all the help you guys can offer and I hope to update you all with my progress as it happens.

It is as easy as that although to start off I use much smaller pots and plant several seeds in each, when they have two sets of leaves, prick them out and pot them on individually.

Spuds are easy - go and get some seed potatoes now from your local GC

On Point 3, I would put them in the greenhouse during the day rather than outside (this early on)
      especially the toms and peppers

If you want to grow onions and potatoes I would get some sets now and get them in. Do you have anywhere in your garden to grow them?

You could plant the Beetroot direct outside - which might be easier for a Newbie than raising in pots and transplanting out?

I think too late to be sowing Pepper and Chilli seeds. The seeds will keep for next year. Buy plants from garden centre this year instead? I would wait until end of April before buying plants - greenhouse should be warm enough (without supplemental heating) by then.

Tomatoes will be fine from seed now. Greenhouse probably too cold for them, so sow inside and grow-on on a windowsill (they can go in the greenhouse when you can maintain a minimum temperature of 10C at night - you might want to look out for a Max/Min Thermometer so you know what the daily temperature range is.

            Hi All,

Many thanks for the replies, really appreciate it.

Scarlet - I've taken your advice and done two pots with around a dozen seeds in each, only done the tomatoes though.

Rustylady - Yep got a garden with a bit of space all around it, is it better to grow potatoes and onions actually in the ground? I've got some large puts and they are about 75cms tall ?

Kristen - Taken your advice and left the peppers and chillis in the pack, will try them next year. In terms of the beetroot. It sounds like if I do onions and potatoes looks like I'm going to have to dig up some of my borders and put them in the ground.

Once again cheers guys for your help so far.

              Hi All,

Just an update, I planted those tomatoes not see anything come out of the pot yet.

              Should I have ?

Any day now, usually about a week for tomatoes.
