haha this thread is so funny. dont sow two full packets of tom (gardeners delight and moneymaker) in two seed trays each, cos they will be succesful and you will end up with over 100 tomato plants that you cant bear to let die and haveto find many people to take them on for you. Mistakes like that were made with so so many other things lol

Don't "not label" your plants in the firm belief that you will remember what they are. You won't, and will end up with a drill of mixed plants.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Dont think that your hoe will snick of weeds right next to your plants stem and leave said plant standing upright.

It will topple over with its stem slashed and you will curse and tell yourself you will not do it again. Till next time.

Don't plant cauliflowers so close together in the belief that they really won't get that big. They do grow that big and they are HUGE, and yes you really do need to plant them that far apart!

As mentioned on previous posts - do not sow seed based on germination of between 80 - 90%. Assume 100% and then sow extras if needed, otherwise you have too many plants and not enough friends to go round.
Sow seeds at the appropriate time for your area - this will come with experience. I tried to get the jump on Mother Nature with my runner beans this year and with June being a really sh*tty month weatherwise, Have had to resow about 200 as they were flattened by the wind, pulled up by the crows or eaten by the rabbits.
Don't think that your local garden centre owner knows it all - he/she doesn't !! - Most of them do not grow from seed anymore, they buy in POS plants or plugs to grow on.

Make sure you use a permanent black marker pen for your labels - they may look pretty in red (and was supposed to be permanent!) but they all faded in the sunshine! Any guesses as to what tattie plants are what, let alone everything else! Bernie

                        Nightmare!

Don't let your three year old get into the greenhouse. She may open the seed box.........

I really don't need to spell it out do I?

PS Farmer Gyles - where in Purley? I'm up by Woodcote School.

Re the comments on three year olds - been there, seen that, gave up getting stressed about it. Let them plant some seeds, or pick flowers and replant them, so long as they are happy, more importantly outside, and even more imporatntly, getting mucky, who really cares

Can't believe this is exactly what my sister in law asked me tonight - she would love Ella to come down to the allotment but is frightened she might pick the veg not the weeds! Mind you Ellas sunflowers are taller than she is 3' - mine are only 1' so far! Bernie

Agree with what you say Sewer Rat; at least they're in the fresh air doing what little kids should be doing and not sat in front of a tv set and as the saying goes; get them young, you've got them for life. They're tomorrow's gardeners

Don't assume that because you've done everything 'by the book' it will just be a case of sowing and harvesting!

It's the 'inbetween stage' that counts and plants, pests, weeds and diseases don't read books!
