Broad Bean seeds to start again

Hi,
Planted my bread bean seeds in toilet rolls like I do every year. Planted them the same time as my runner beans.
Runner beans have popped up and are well running away with growth. Think they will be planted next week and well protected in case of frost.
Anyway just one sad lonely broad bean has popped up. So I decided to carefully tip a couple of roll out to see what was happening. They had all rotted and were all soft and yucky. I watered them and turned them the same as the runner beans.
So today I bought some new seeds.
I was wondering if I should wait a few more weeks and plant them in the ground or start them off in a pot?

I'd go with direct sowing of beans now, though I think you are very early to be looking at runner beans yet, mine don;t go out until the middle of May.

I've just down mine 2 days ago I did them the same time last year had a great crop!

There's an old saying my father still says, 'don't lose a clout till May is out'. Which loosely translates to we still run the risk of getting frosts until the end of May, so don't take off your vest just yet!!!

A lot of what I grow is still waiting to be started off. Somethings are up and away but they are hardier plants that will happily overwinter too. Starting too early can stall growth, while waiting just a little longer can ensure that your plants bypass earlier sowings as there is no check.

Its a fine balancing act, and we gamble with it every year.

Where is that book based, somewhere hot, I don't start harvesting until July/August and will continue into November. Is it me.....?

my broad beans have been in the ground for a while now, and are already flowering ...

I planted 3 types of runner beans seedlings (approx 6-8 inches high) on sunday .... so far so good

Mikey its not only you, just checked my journal and my runners are sown around 1st week in May and planted out end of May beginning of June. So another month before I get my saved seeds out.

Yesterday's Beechgrove (and that's Way Up North of course) were sowing all bean types (in pots, under cover), so not only Broad Beans but also Runners, French, the lot - . I thought it was "Well Early" ...
